Introduction: Panna is a city located
in the foothills of the Vindhyan Ranges spreading along Panna and
Chhatarpur districts of Madhya Pradesh. The distinctive importance
of this reserve forest is that it is the northernmost forest in
the distribution of Teakwood and the eastern limit of Teak growing
mixed forest. The river Ken flows north to south in this forest.
Ken River serves as a home to many water animals like crocodiles.
Ken River is the perennial source of water flowing in Madhya Pradesh
and hence it is termed as the lifeline of this National Park. Ken
also gives picturesque scenery as it meanders multiple times in
the reserve.
Species Available: Tigers are roaming freely in all secure in
the campus of this reserve. Leopards, wild dogs, wolfs, hyena, caracals
and small cats are all seen roaming around the jungle. The rocky
escarpments and the valleys, which are undisturbed, are the most
favorite place for the sloth bears there in this reserve. The largest
Indian deer, Sambar runs around the thickly wooded forests. Chital
and Chowsingha are also found in this forest. Nilgais and Chinkaras
are easily visible running and jumping around the open grasslands
on the periphery. There are more than 200 species of avifauna animals
comprising the migratory birds. White necked storks, bareheaded
goose, honey buzzard, king vulture, paradise flycatcher, blossom
headed parakeet etc. are common birds which can be easily seen and
enjoy by the visitors. Many species of reptiles like snakes, pythons
and lizards are found here. There are also a variety of plant species.
This is a deciduous forest with rocky landscape and uneven terrain
under scrubby grasses and vegetation. Panna is a rich reserve with
almost every kind of animal families. Rare and common species of
animals like tiger, wolf, chital, sloth bear, chinkara and sambar
are found in abundance here. Crocodiles are common in the river
of Ken.
Travel Information: Panna has a tropical type of climate. Summer
here is scorching and very uneasy. Winters are mild and very comfortable
as the temperature hangs around or below 25 degree Celsius. There
is rainfall in July and stretch till September. Assuming all in
balance, it is best to visit Panna during the month of January to
May. People of Panna speak Hindi and English. Khajuraho is the nearest
airport at 57 km from Panna. Daily flight is available to Delhi,
Mumbai and Varanasi. There is a railway station nearest in Satna,
a major junction connecting to many cities of western India.
