Introduction: Bhuj is a city in Gujarat
locating in the most western point of the Indian Territory. It is
located near the Gulf of Kutch with small mounds overlooking the
whole of Bhuj. It is a treasure of Hindu heritage. The culture and
tradition of this city is as pure as their origination. Bhuj is
among those very few places, which is aloof from any foreign invasion.
The hospitality of the people of Bhuj is remarkable which is a rare
availability in the modern society. Bhuj is also ornamented with
small meandering streets, temples palaces and the oldest museum
in the state of Gujarat. Its villages are popular for their traditional
handicraft and embroidery products.
History: The city of Bhuj was founded by a local ruler Maharao
Hamir in 1510. Bhuj was made capital by another local ruler Rao
Khengarji I in 1549. During the British rule too, Bhuj remained
as an independent state. Later it became a part of India after the
independence of India in 1947. Once Bhuj was a city walled on all
the sides, which is not seen in the present Bhuj boundary. The Hamirsagar
Tank, Desalsar Tank and Pragsar Tank were the only three tanks in
the Bhuj territory. The Indian Air Force now occupies those lands
of the tanks. Bhuj lived on the water of Hamirsagar Tank.
Places of interest: The traditional Kutchi style of palaces
is remarkable in Bhuj. Aina Mahal is an interesting place to visit.
It is made surrounded by mirrors and is located in the old part
of the city. It also has an inbuilt museum and a pleasure pool within
this palace. Near the Aina Mahal is the notable Prag Mahal. Kuchch
Museum, the oldest museum of Gujarat, which was built by Sir James
Ferguson, was built in 1877. It has a variety of historical artifacts
denoting the culture and tradition of the Bhuj. Other important
tourist spots are Sarad Bagh Palace, Swami Narayan Temple and the
Bharatiya Sanskriti Darshan etc.
Travel information: Summer is scorching and the rainy season
is cyclonic, it is not advisable to visit. The perfect time to visit
Bhuj is during the period between October to March. The festival
of Rann Utsav (desert festival) is held every year in February and
March. Bhuj has air transportation with Mumbai and Ahmedabad from
the New Station Road. The railway station of Bhuj is just one kilometer
from the main city. Less number of trains goes through Bhuj. There
is a very good bus services both the state buses as well as the
private luxurious buses. Regular service of bus is available for
Gujarat, Rajasthan and its local areas.
