Introduction: The Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary
is also known as Keoladeo Ghana Bird Sanctuary. It is among the
world's finest wild life sanctuary. This bird sanctuary homes a
variety of bird species. This park is something, which people cannot
resist easily. It is abound with beautiful and rare species of birds.
In reality a Maharaja created it. The name of this sanctuary is
taken from the name of god Keoladeo that is enshrined inside a temple
in the sanctuary. Ghana literally means dense meaning the dense
forest. This sanctuary has been listed as the world's heritage site.
Species available: The Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary is a prime
habitat of many species of resident and the migratory birds. The
sanctuary is providing shelter to different beautiful species
of birds. There are about 415 bird species and out of it 117 species
are migratory birds migrated from far of places like Siberia and
China. Apart from birds this National Park also provides shelter
to other faunal species. Faunal animals like sambar, chital, nilgai
and boar are also found in this sanctuary. This park is spreading
over an area of about 29 sq km. 11 sq km are marshes and remaining
is scrubland and grassland. The park was created the king of Bharatpur
for hunting. At one point of history it was the best duck shooting
wetland of the world. The ban on hunting started in 60s in Bharatpur.
It was declared national Park in 1982 and as a world heritage
site in 1985. There are about 300 species of indigenous birds.
Many species of birds migrate in this park during the winter season.
This migration mainly takes place from Siberia and Central Asia.
Cranes, Pelicans, Geese, Ducks, Eagles, Hawks, Shanks, Stints,
Wagtails, Warbler, Wheatears, Flycatchers, Bunting and Larks are
the main migrated birds that spend the winter here and return
back to their places.
Travel information: The nearest airport for air transportation
is at Agra 56 km from Bharatpur. The Agra airport connects to
Delhi and other major cities of India. Bharatpur railway station
is just 6 km far from the sanctuary. Trains are running to various
places of India as Delhi, Jaipur, Mumbai and Agra. There is also
a good connectivity of places through the roadways. State buses
as well as the private buses runs regularly. Roadways transportation
is extended to the cities of Rajasthan, Jaipur and Agra. There
are all type of accommodations that suits to ones pocket. The
best season to visit is from October to March.
