Introduction: Badami is located in
the Bijapur district of Karnataka. It is at a distance of 500 km
from the city of Bangalore. Badami is a place with a rich heritage
and cultural prosperity. It has rich history and architecture. The
Chalukya Kingdom once had this place as their capital. A number
of caves and carving of 6th and 7th century belonging to the Chalukya
Dynasty are found. The architecture of the Chalukyas found in Badami
is a fine mixture of Nagara style of the north and Dravidian style
of the south. Badami is encircled with a number of places with historical
importance.
History: The past of Badami is associated with the kingdom
of Chalukyas. The great emperor of the Chalukya Dynasty, Pulekeshin
I founded the city of Badami in the 6th century AD. Since, the
city has been the capital of Chalukya Dynasty from 540 AD to 757
AD. An ample of the Chalukya remains has been found in Badami.
Later the Rashtrakutas defeated the rulers of Badami and the people
of Badami run into a phase of hardship after the fall of their
kingdom. By the course of time many rulers including the Chalukyas
of Kalyan overran its rule in Badami. Finally Badami was taken
under by the British and made it a part of Bombay Presidency.
Places of interests: North Fort is a place where you can
find temples, remains of olden granary, treasury, and a watchtower
that can see all over it's surrounding. The upper Shivalaya Temple
is still full of portraits and sculptures pertaining to Lord Krishna.
The Mahakuteshwara Temple is all surrounded by hills. It was a
center of the Shaiva cult, in Dravidian style. There is a natural
spring pond called Vishnu Pushkarni. Jain Temple is a little east
of the shrine with ample huge figures of Parshvanatha. The Cave
Temple is a four connected temples with a line of stairs.
Travel information: One shall not plan a tour to Badami
during summer because it is scorching hot during summer. The best
time to visit Badami is during winters between September and February.
Belgaum is the nearest airport to Badami at 150 km. Bangalore
that is 500 km away from Badami is the next nearest airport. These
airports are well connected regularly with all major parts of
the country. Hubli, 130 km is the well-connected rail line with
Bangalore and Hyderabad. Buses are the most regular means of transportation.
